Playground Rubber Surfacing Options
There are a range of playground surfacing options including playground safety mats and rubber playground tiles. We do not however install mats or tiles. Mats are a portable option, and tiles can shift and warp over time causing potential trip hazards. As such, we feel these options can be a false economy.
At Cheshire Bound we only focus on long-lasting, safety-first, high quality solutions with full and proper ground preparation. And we are so confident in our installation that we guarantee our playground surfaces for 12 years.
Our chosen options are a smooth finish wet pour rubber, or a rougher textured bonded rubber mulch using recycled rubber tyres. We talk about these more below, but both are highly durable, and provide excellent shock absorption with all of our installations meeting BS EN 1177 (relating to critical fall height regulations).
We pride ourselves on delivering safe, practical and creative outdoor playground surfaces for your school, park, garden or play space. And we’re always here to give you our expert advice if you would like to discuss your project.
Wet Pour Rubber aka Pour-In-Place (PIP)
A pour-in-place (PIP) bonded rubber surface, also known as wet pour rubber, uses a fine rubber crumb mixed with resin, and gives a smooth, seamless finish.
It is the number one option for rubber playground surfacing where more complex designs and vibrant colours are required.
The surface is safe, durable and accessible for wheelchair users and those with impaired mobility. As it can be used on flat or sloped surfaces it allows great design capabilities and is suitable for a variety of sites.
Bonded Rubber Mulch
Application is essentially the same as the smooth PIP rubber surfacing, but a bonded rubber mulch finish uses larger shredded rubber pieces, which gives a loose-fill effect.
Its rougher texture looks similar to wood bark, although as with poured-in-place rubber, it is held together with resin, so it doesn’t move around.
Rubber mulch is more durable than wood mulch, and also much safer due to its high impact absorption. It affords good grip, can be laid on sloped sites, and is often used for paths and walkways.
Playground Rubber Flooring FAQs
How long does a playground rubber surface last?
With the proper ground preparation, our high quality installation, and a bit of ongoing maintenance you can expect your poured-in-place rubber playground to last for 8-12 years. In fact we are so confident in the service we provide that we guarantee our work for 12 years.
Bonded rubber mulch surfaces have a similar lifespan although may need topping up over time.
What base do you put under a rubber playground?
The first stage of ground preparation is to dig out the area to a depth of around 4-5 inches and add a compacted stone sub base and geotextile membrane.
We then add 70mm of large aggregate rubber base, and in the case of the smooth poured-in-place solutions we then add a 20mm fine granular, coloured top coat.
Does playground rubber have drainage?
Yes – both the poured-in-place and bonded mulch options allow for drainage and are SUDs compliant.
How do you clean and maintain a rubber playground surface?
For both the smooth poured-in-place finish and the rougher bonded mulch, regular sweeping and/or leaf blowing helps prevent debris from building up on the playground surface.
An occasional jetwash will help clear more persistent grime and keep your playground looking its best.
In some locations, you may want to consider treating the surface with an algae cleaning solution in the spring, but we will advise you thoroughly on how to maintain your rubber playground area at the time of installation.
